Piers Morgan Faces UK Media Inquiry
First Published: December 20, 2011 12:02 PM EST Credit: WireImage LONDON, U.K. -- Caption Piers Morgan attends the 2011 NBC Upfronts at the Hilton Hotel, NY City, May 16, 2011CNN star interviewer Piers Morgan faces questions Tuesday about his time at the top of Britains tabloid industry widely anticipated testimony that may dredge up allegations his British newspaper career was colored by wrongdoing. Morgan ran two British tabloids the News of the World and the Daily Mirror before his editorship was cut short by scandal in 2004. Hes due to give evidence to Britains media ethics inquiry by video link from the United States one of a host of tabloid newspaper executives to face the inquiry, set up in the wake of the News of the World phone hacking scandal. More than a dozen journalists have been arrested, senior executives with Rupert Murdochs News Corp. media empire have lost their jobs, and top U.K. police officers have resigned over their failure to tackle the scandal. Witnesses at the inquiry have exposed the seamy side of British journalism, with reporters accused of cooking up stories, blackmailing subjects, hacking phones and paying bribes to police officers to secure tips. Morgan may have more juicy details to add. His memoirs contain tantalizing references to questionably obtained material, and the 46-year-old has acknowledged condoning unethical behavior including overseeing payoffs to spies on rival newspapers. Morgan denies having ever hacked a phone or knowingly run a story based on hacked information. But hes expected to be quizzed on statements that appear to refer to the practice in particular a 2006 article in which he says he was played a phone message left by former Beatle Paul McCartney on the answering machine of his now ex-wife Heather Mills. Mills has said theres no way Morgan could have gotten hold of the message honestly. The inquiry, led by Lord Justice Brian Leveson, heard Tuesday about the culture in tabloid newsrooms one described by some witnesses as being scarred by bullying. Steve Turner, general secretary of the British Association of Journalists, said he had dealt with more than a dozen cases of bullying in the newsroom in recent years. He blamed diminishing circulation and the demand to produce better stories and more of them from a diminishing work force for some of the pressure, but said the culture at Murdochs News of the World was particularly challenging. That, he said, may have pressured people more than most into behaving appallingly. The inquiry heard earlier Tuesday from reporter Sharon Marshall, whose book Tabloid Girl: A True Story detailed the misdemeanors of Britains press including faked expenses, manufactured quotes, unscrupulous reporters, hot-tempered editors and worse. Marshall took pains to distance herself from her own book, saying she never intended to accuse anyone ofwrongdoing and that the last half of the title True Story might have been misleading. I intended this as a comical tale, she said. One by one, she dismissed her nearly all her own stories which her book insists are accurate as dramatization, 'topspin, 'a good yarn, 'a joke, or an embellished shaggy dog tale. True or not, Morgan seems to have approved; In a blurb splashed across the cover, he called the book hilarious and gossipy. Separately, the lawyer for former England soccer player Paul Gascoigne suggested that the sportsmans legal action against the News of the World was close to being settled. Gascoigne is one of several dozen people suing the paper over claims that their phones were hacked. Lawyer Jeremy Reed said the case was settling but didnt give any further details. Murdoch shut down the 168-year-old News of the World in July after the full hacking scandal broke. Copyright 2011 by The Associated Press. All rights reserved. New American Psycho Developing
Patrick Bateman getting an update?Though the book was only last adapted back in 2000, Lionsgate has decided that what it really needs to do is craft another take on American Psycho. You'll likely recall that director Mary Harron was behind that version of Bret Easton Ellis' satirical novel, which saw Christian Bale deliver a killer (fnarr) performance as Patrick Bateman, an investment banker whose smooth corporate surface belied a boiling cauldron of hate and violence which spewed over at night as he killed colleagues and call girls.Noble Jones, a rising star of ads and music video directing gigs (and a protégé of David Fincher who shot second unit on The Social Network) has pitched an idea to the studio that would switch the setting from Bateman's original '80s Manhattan milieu to modern-day Noo Yoik.Jones has apparently now turned in a finished script and it waiting to see if Lionsgate gives the go-ahead. While we're really not certain the world needs another version of the story (and it already spawned a much less effective sequel), Jones does at least warrant some interest given his links to Fincher. And who knows? Maybe there really is something to say about the financial situation through Bateman's ways today?
Battleship Preview: Expect 'Big, Fun Escapism' for that Inner 12-Year-Old
Around the June visit to the Film 44 offices in Santa Monica, Battleship director Peter Berg organized his vision for your May 18, 2012 epic actioner. “Battleship will most likely be a little of huge, fun escapism,” he referred to, playing clips of footage inside the cozy darkness of his editing suite. “It’s not to imply we don’t take ourselves seriously perform aspire for just about any certain amount of emotion and reality, but this is not a film that’s made to traumatize.” This shojuld 't be an unexpected to anybody familiar with the film’s roots. A sizable-budget naval action flick modified from Hasbro’s classic energy power grid warfare game — the initial in the wave of game movies later on from Hollywood, and the first to confront natural viewer skepticism they invite — Battleship can be a PG-13 tent pole that will face manifold challenges if the opens next summer season, bookended with the Avengers and MIB 3. The initial of people challenges? Methods for getting beyond the banal “C-5… Hit!” association most grownups still connect while using simplistic Battleship brand. Click for Movieline’s start searching gallery of images from Battleship. But Berg immediately saw the chance of hysteria, high stakes, and storytelling inside the fundamental game scenario. “If we're playing Battleship against each other, we’re calling out shots at random, and lastly tips over,” he referred to. “You vary from just as one unknown enemy with a known enemy. There’s a location of discovery in Battleship the hook, plus it’s why the sport’s been around for this type of very long time. As playing, I have simply no clue what you're, and out of the blue I start to realize what you're, it’s very satisfying. ‘Oh, that’s where he's. That was his strategy.’ What can I aim to accomplish as soon as I determine what your location is? I aim to get rid of you, as quickly and strongly after i can prior to deciding to kill me. There’s something very naturally dramatic relating to this.” The story, because of authors Jon and Erich Hoeber (Red-colored-colored, Whiteout), goes similar to this: One sunny excursion inside the Gulf a mysterious alien pressure begins an assault in the world, departing the defense in the planet within reach of ships from five worldwide fleets. Our hero, Lt. Alex Hopper (Taylor Kitsch) — a edgy but promising naval officer, must learn to become leader… and, clearly, guy up enough to request commanding superior Liam Neeson for his daughter’s submit marriage. Within the editing suite, Berg carried out rough moments within the film highlighting the figures of Battleship. One, through which star Kitsch (of Friday Evening Lights as well as the approaching John Carter) meets cute with Brooklyn Decker with comic results, shown Kitsch’s likability factor. Berg credits his acting background along with his have to locate an “emotional core” to peg the larger action around. “As large as all the effects get, as large to ensure that as true since it is that now we could virtually do just about anything … it won’t work if there’s not just a fundamental attachment for the character, to individuals.” Meanwhile, footage featuring Beyonce as Petty Officer Raikes suggested the pop star recognized for her sensual gyrations and piercing vocals might really somewhat disappear into her role as Kitsch’s naval partner. (“I spent lots of time inside the Navy thinking about who'd appear sensible and who'd bring a metropolitan swagger with this character,” Berg referred to of his idea to cast Beyonce. “Put a telephone call in, stood a great number of conferences, and he or she’s a great girl, very difficult-working, very smart, desires to do well, really strong work ethic, no attitude, no diva nonsense. She was great.”) But a difficult montage featuring moments from with the film, a couple of of which can be seen in the initial trailer, gave a far greater idea of the film’s look and scope: Gorgeous wide-open waters, a comically ball-busting repartee between Kitsch and Neeson, the CG-created outcomes of the entering pressure, dealing with cope with a literal imagining from the products most likely probably the most imaginative sci-fi brainiacs might have imagined while moving pegs around the energy power grid inside their youth. The feeling it conjured looked like Independence Day: Muscular s action coupled with a loyal streak tempered having a light comic touch. With aliens. Indeed, the aliens. Universal’s keeping a great cover the creatures themselves, though Berg offered glimpses at their technology (pressure area seen in a clip, which keeps everything inside in and everything outdoors out) and introduced their very own personal maquette to show. Sadly, even explanations they're under systems, but here’s that which you know: The burglars of Battleship are recon experts scouting Earth’s assets, and they have advanced technology. Berg offered the following real-world parallel. “We are concentrating on planets that individuals’ve proven to be potentially encouraging of existence,” whatever they call Goldilocks planets… ultimately’re delivering beacon signals to those planets, [Stephen] Hawking’s the one which showed up in this area and mentioned, ‘Probably not recommended.’” Perform aliens in addition to their motives carry much much deeper meaning within Berg’s vision of Battleship? “No,” he mentioned positively. “I don’t view Battleship just like a political film.”

It's the Mirror that starts the knowledge, quickly creating the story in the prologue with sly jokes and native references that other figures continue with the show. It's the first indication this is not a Disney-fied Snow White-colored. Indeed, the expansion owes more to have an up-to-date vaudeville style inside the first musical number the villagers dance inside the town square just like a very sassy Snow products out Lady Gaga's "Born Using This MethodInch in true Broadway fashion. Every fairytale heroine takes a partner/secret admirer and Snow White's is court jester Muddles (Jonathan Meza, amusing), so-referred to as as they can get his words muddled up -- he longs to "liss the kips" of Snow -- a apparently endless way to obtain puns. In the jerk to Disney, the tyros placed on costumes assigned with rubber heads that seem to be like the figures created with the Mouse House and mime their parts to have an audio track. Within the castle, the entire (signal boos and hisses within the audience) sings a darkly portentous version in the "True Blood stream" theme song, "Bad Things," as she cooks within the poison apple, transforms right into a classic hag and takes the fruit to Snow. Yes, our heroine eats it and dies. From this level, the story differs in the trad fairytale but, suffice to convey, everything calculates well utilizing a amusing scene where Muddles, aided with the dwarves, asks the Mirror's help and can obtain the spell wrong and calls up first "DwtsInch judge Bruno Tonioli after which it Nigel Lythgoe, within the "And That Means You Think You'll Be Able To Dance" persona, before raising the Mirror (enabling Patrick Harris, finding themselves ornamented by "small people" rather than small blue people, to lower in the promo for his "The Smurfs" movie). Bergen, Figlioli and Meza elicit howls of laughter once they show on stage in this particular high-wind generator as well as the jokes flow thick and fast, many concentrating on two levels, "Shrek"-style, to draw in kids in addition to their parents. Pearce's voice blends fantastically with Bergen's, who carried out Bob Gaudio in "Jersey Boys," while Sirtis' remarkably deep tone was wonderfully menacing. DreamWorks Animation Wins Aucton For Captain Underpants Feature Film Rights
EXCLUSIVE: After a spirited auction, DreamWorks Animation has acquired rights to make a feature out of Captain Underpants, the popular 8-volume book series by Dav Pilkey. DreamWorks Animation wasn’t the only bidder, but won the title this morning. The books revolve around a couple of precocious fourth graders named George Beard and Harold Hutchins. Looking to get back at nasty, student-hating principal Mr. Benny Krupp, the boys hypnotize the principal and cause him to become Captain Underpants. He’s a superhero who is nice and helpful to children and manages to get into all kinds of misadventures with the fourth graders shadowing him to make sure he doesn’t get hurt. The principal has no recollection of his heroics when he returns to normal. Pikey has completed eight volumes with a ninth in the works, Captain Underpants and the Terrifying Return of Tippy Tinkletrousers. Scholastic publishes the books. DWA chief creative officer Bill Damaschke said he and his colleagues have chased Pilkey for movie rights since he first began publishing the series in 1997, but the author never wanted to sell them. “I know he’d been approached many times, and finally, Kassie Evashevski at UTA and Amy Berkower at Writers House phoned us and simply said, ‘He’s ready,’” Damaschke said. “There’s a great anarchic combination of kid and adult humor, and George and Harold are these terrific mischievous characters. And we felt that hypnotizing the principal is one of those great ideas. We’re all big fans of the book.” UTA repped Pilkey and the lit agency in making the deal.

BUSAN, Columbia -- Using the buzz surrounding China's potential becoming an entertainment business giant, some filmmakers aren't waiting for East to fulfill West.Beijing-based American helmer Dayyan Eng thinks his experience working within the where you live now Chinese system has aided him to offer the biz's fastest growing major market."The film industry in China remains growing and changing, but I have not really had that numerous difficulties with the equipment, because I showed up in this area of the atmosphere which i started my career in China, so with techniques that's all I realize,In . Eng states. "I learn how to experience within the rules of the sport here." His "Inseparable" made its worldwide bow within the Busan Film Festival. The pic stars Kevin Spacey -- the initial Hollywood thesp to appear inside an all-Chinese-funded film Christian Bale adopted, in Zhang Yimou's "Flowers of War."Eng is cosmopolitan. He was produced in Taiwan, was elevated in Dallas, Melbourne and Macau, before moving to Beijing within the college years, dividing his education involving the U. of Washington as well as the Beijing Film Academy.Eng combines his experience from film school inside the U.S. in what he's learned in China. All his movies are actually fully Chinese productions, although his crew is worldwide."You will discover plenty of new companies and new money, the double-edged sword. For individuals who've good projects, it'll get simpler, and when you're old on the market, it's simpler," according to him. But everything new money expects to invest in lots of films, flooding industry and undermining quality -- something free air travel familiar with the center part of the past decade.Eng's budgets are small, on componen in what U.S. indies use -- $5 million and under -- although he wouldn't be attracted on specifics. Unlike many films being created in China nowadays, Eng is searching at contemporary reality and not historic dramas. He thinks that Chinese auds are tiring of chopsocky epics and there's an growing space for social dramas. Eng states he written "Inseparable" to become Chinese story though an international perspective. Spacey plays Chuck, a u . s . states expatriate inside the southern capital of scotland - Guangzhou -- China's third-greatest city plus an important industrial center and port. He lives next door from the lower-on-his-luck white-colored-collar professional, carried out by Hong Kong heartthrob Kevin Wu. Chuck tries to help Kevin turn his existence around."('Inseparable') handles the issues of coping with the big guy and greedy companies," Eng states, "also this didn't matter where Chuck came from from. It felt as being a natural step will be able to discover as we (could) get yourself a Hollywood actor for your part, since i have am bilingual and bicultural." Wu have been attached, so when Spacey saw the script, he came onboard too.Eng's had past landing top talent for his films. His previous pic, 2005's "Waiting Alone," a contempo drama about several well-off Beijing hipsters, featured Chow Yun-body body fat, and starred Xia Yu, Li Bingbing and Gong Beibi, who also stars in "Inseparable," as Kevin's wife. Eng's next pic, a heist/action movie, is striving to shoot in Hong Kong next season. Contact the number newsroom at news@variety.com

'The Simpsons' producers accepted pay cuts
'The Simpsons'A number of top creative executives working on Fox's "The Simpsons" have already committed to taking a pay cut in order to continue the series beyond its current 23rd season, according to sources. The disclosure came to light as 20th Century Fox Television is demanding the cast of actors who voice "Simpsons" characters take a 45% pay cut in order to continue the series. The actors have countered with a willingness to take a 30% cut with a piece of the backend, but the studio rejected that offer. The reason the studio is pressuring the actors to reach a new deal is that the "Simpsons" production cycle is such that a script for a series finale would have to be written as soon as possible in order to be produced in time for air. A final script read could be set in motion for as early as December. While the unspecified execs have indicated they are willing to reduce their salaries, they have yet to sign their new deals. Exec producers for "The Simpsons" include Al Jean, John Frink, James L. Brooks, Matt Groening, Matt Selman and Sam Simon. It unknown whether all have committed to the reduction in compensationor whether that request extended below the EP level. Reps for top "Simpsons" producers either declined comment or calls were not returned.A spokesman for 20th TV declined comment.Even with the savings that would come from top "Simpsons" creative personnel reducing their compensation, it likely pales in comparison to the amount the studio would save if the actors concede to their 45% reduction demand. That would effectively bring each of the six principal "Simpsons" actors down from $8 million to $4 million per season. Unknown is whether the reduction in compensation affected producers' salaries or backend participation. Terms of the new deal would extend for however long the series would continue, which has yet to be determined.Sources confirmed the actors were asked to make a decision about the offer by Friday, which was first reported Wednesday by the Wrap.Should "Simpsons" end in its 23rd season, that would bring the total episode count to 516. Last deal 20th TV made with Fox and Gracie Films for the series was a two-year deal with an option for a third season, and that option was the 23rd season. Keck's Exclusives: First Look at Glee's Lucky Charmer
Damian McGinty On November 1, the first of The Glee Project's two grand-prize winners, Damian McGinty, makes his Glee debut as Irish exchange student Rory Flanagan. "I am having the time of my life," reports the Derry, Ireland, native, who will be on the show for at least seven episodes. "Rory is living with Brittany [Heather Morris], who thinks he is her own personal leprechaun only she can see." While the cast took to Damian right away, not everyone at McKinley High appreciates the sophomore's charms. "He does a little falsetto in his first song, and Kurt did not like that because Kurt's the soprano of the group and doesn't want that taken from him," says Chris Colfer. And Santana "quietly is in love with Brittany," adds Damian, "so she doesn't like Rory because he also has a thing for Brittany." Sounds like Santana may have cause for concern: "We just did a fun scene in Brittany's bedroom," says Damian. The luck of the Irish, indeed! Simon Cowell's The X Factor Finally Premieres: Let us Evaluate It Together!
Simon Cowell In the last year, you've heard lots of hype from Simon Cowell about his new singing competition, The X Factor: It's huge! Auditions are locked in packed arenas! It's really youthful and extremely old participants! Groups are permitted! New judge Nicole Scherzinger will out-cry and out-crazy Paula Abdul! L.A. Reid will ultimately give Simon a worthy opponent! And did he mention it's huge? For those these reasons, we ought to most likely brace ourselves for this to blow The American Idol Show and also the Voice out of prime time's talent show-plagued waters, right? 5 ways Simon Cowell intends to crush Idol using the X Factor: Mo' money, crazy Nicole ... Well, since you have updated directly into Wednesday's premiere to determine the products firsthand, let us discuss. You want to hear your thinking around the night's standouts, negative and positive, beginning with: Contestant No. 1, 13-year-old Rachel Crow. She told us this audition is an essential factor she's ever done and that her group of six is near-broke, before busting out right into a seriously soulful rendition of "Whim." Child performers aren't our factor, particularly not excessively precocious ones, but we are totally and absolutely won over by her. You? What about Siameze Floyd and the hair and the screams and the many painful-searching splits? Had you been surprised the idol judges dug it? And therefore are you already questioning Simon's truthfulness also? Or do you consider his evaluation is simply a ploy to create "good TV"? Moving onto the night's first duo, who occur to be also the night's first old participants, Serta and Venita, 70 and 83, correspondingly. Was their sweet but excruciating "Unchained Tune" a train wreck you loved watching a treadmill you hid from? Same question for that divisive diva Simone Fight, a USC student and ambitious Pussycat Toy - had you been left puzzled over Simon's defense of her "fearlessness" or have you think she was pretty damn fierce? My god, it's huge! And 9 other activities we learned in the premiere from the X Factor Here is a question we are now puzzling over: Is Cheryl Cole really that confusing? Or did someone at Fox just owe Nicole an extremely large favor? (Because frankly, Cheryl was awesome, made total sense and was adorable as well. Please submit your plausible explanations why she was fired within the comments section because we are approaching empty.) Also, would you care if Simon and L.A. possess a real feud happening? Could it be an entertaining one, real or photoshopped? Whose opinion, at this time, would you respect more? Another old one approaching: Stacey Francis is really a 42-year-old single mother who states she did not want "to die with this particular music within me.Inch She got a standing O on her uber emotional "Natural Lady" - could it have been oversinging, or wonderfully raw? Exactly what do you think about her chances which makes it towards the finish? A '! A minimum of, here's Geo Godley, X Factor's first honest-to-God horror story. Have you howl or scowl after he demonstrated us his very hairy upper thighs and thankfully logo'd-out guy bits towards the tune of his original song "Mr. Stud"? (There's just one proper way to reply to this, commenters.) And exactly what do all of us think about host Steve Johnson to date? Much better than Ryan Seacrest? Indifferent to his British charms? Too early to call? Also, would you such as these auditions happening before crowds? Would you respect the opinion from the public to date? Or are you currently annoyed they just root for that large belters? To our next good artist Marcus Canty, who dared to complete Steve Wonder's "If Only" after which significantly fell towards the floor, that was then significantly edited into two segments through the producers. Color us annoyed. But okay, the boy can sing. Is the fact that enough? Our first above-average group to undergo may be the Answer, which sang "Moving within the Deep," that is good, they also sang "Happy Birthday" to Nicole, that is bad. Better or worse compared to groups around the Sing-Off? Train wreck No. 2 is Nici No-Last-Title. Hoo boy. This second hour appears to become diving into Idol's bag of William Hung methods. Fortunately, they sweep other not-good performers right into a montage until Darren Michaels. Oy. We believe The Voice has spoiled us. Would you also prefer instances of mostly good auditions? Talking about, was garbage guy and former junkie Chris Rene really a great audition? Yes, it's perfect that he's cleaning for themself and the boy, and writing a rap regarding your struggles takes some creativeness and vulnerability. But did the extremely positive reception to "Youthful Homey" resonate along with you? We are still thinking... OK fire away. Is X Factor really everything not the same as The American Idol Show? Whether it's a clone, would you care? Are you currently just happy that Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul have returned (and back together again)? Since you have spent equal time with Cheryl and Nicole, that do you want? Are groups only a very bad idea? Election your heart within the comments section.

Paramount Embarking on $700 Million Makeover of Its Hollywood Studio
Paramount Pictures is planning a $700 million upgrade of its Hollywood headquarters, which cover 62 acres, the company said Tuesday. The studio, which has been based in its current location since 1926, is filing applications with the city of Los Angeles for what it is dubbing the Hollywood Project, a 25-year plan to improve its existing studio lot and adjacent properties. Most of the development will take place at the studio's main 56-acre lot at 5555 Melrose Ave., which was created when Paramount bought the former RKO Studios from Desilu Productions in 1967. Portions of the lot along Melrose and limited areas within the main production area are being targeted for development, although the studio said it will maintain many of the historic structures while modernizing them. The plan also involves six properties in Hollywood adjacent to the studio. As it begins the approvals process and environmental reviews, Paramount said it will reach out to the local community to offer information and answer questions about the project over the next several months. It said that the capital improvements will create nearly 7,300 jobs during construction and 12,600 jobs during operations, with the project pegged to generate $3.1 billion in economic output annually. "As the last major studio physically located in Hollywood, this project is fundamentally about maintaining a robust and healthy entertainment industry in Los Angeles, laying the long-term foundation to preserve and grow jobs and employment in the heart of the entertainment industry, as well as ensuring that the legacy and heritage of this iconic studio are protected for future generations," Paramount chairman and CEO Brad Grey said.
